Why do many small businesses fail to scale? Today’s guest says that it’s a function of leadership and it’s fixable.
Dave Bookbinder goes Behind The Numbers with Hal Levenson, Partner and Chief Visionary Officer  at Haefele Flanagan.
Former CPA, Hal Levenson, spent many years in his accounting practice helping small and medium-sized companies, in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia area. An entrepreneur himself, Hal is passionate about the contributions that entrepreneurs make to economic growth, standard of living, skill advancement, and community development. Yet, in his years in accounting, he saw the frustration of CEOs trying to align business objectives with personal goals. He noticed that so many businesses seemed stuck. Employees at most every level were putting in long hours and working exceptionally hard just to get an edge on a competitor, keep up with technology or handle sensitive personnel issues.
When organizations attempt to carry out major business functions without the required skills and behaviors, it creates a great and unnecessary challenge and slows business growth. Hal founded Trilogy Partners in 2009 to provide these businesses and their CEOs with the direction, planning, and financial advice that they need. He formed a team of experienced C-Suite advisors, called Alliance Partners, who could help entrepreneurs implement their vision.
In 2021, Trilogy Partners merged with Haefele Flanagan to provide stronger outcomes for clients, whom now have access to holistic business advisory services from strategy through finance.  HFConsulting services include, but are not limited to, strategic planning, executive and leadership coaching, business transition and exit planning, financial education, and C-Suite support.
In this episode we unpack the various factors that impact a company's ability to scale, including identifying blind spots; making tough decisions; creating healthy conflict to increase accountability; and more!

Research suggests that individuals who lack empathy and remorse and possess manipulative tendencies are drawn to leadership positions in companies. Surprisingly, the incidence of psychopathy among CEOs is comparable to that of the prison population, with up to 1 in 5 corporate executives exhibiting psychopathic traits. This alarming statistic highlights the significant presence of psychopathy among CEOs, especially when compared to the general population where only 1 in 100 individuals are psychopaths.
In a fascinating conversation, Dave Bookbinder delves into the subject with Jack McCullough, the President of CFO Leadership Council and author of "Secrets of Rockstar CFOs" and "The Psychopathic CEO: An Executive Survival Guide." Jack, who founded The CFO Leadership Council in 2006, has successfully established a platform for chief financial officers to access top-notch professional development programs and networking events. With his extensive experience as the Director of KPMG's Global Innovation Center and as a CFO for 26 startups, Jack understands the challenges faced by corporate leaders in today's business landscape. His expertise has earned him recognition and media attention, with interviews on Bloomberg, CNN, and Fox Business Network, as well as mentions in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, CFO Magazine, and Business Finance Magazine.
Jack's contribution to the field of finance extends beyond his role as a CFO. He has developed a venture capital course for Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan MBA candidates, solidifying his reputation as a thought leader in the industry. Furthermore, he is the visionary behind the highly acclaimed MIT Sloan CFO Summit, regarded as the most influential conference for financial leaders worldwide.
In this episode Jack tells us how to identify a psychopathic CEO including some famous ones;  how to survive working with a psychopathic CEO;  what separates a good CFO from an elite CFO, and more!

Today's special guest is the author of The Business Hierarchy Of Needs® – Transforming Strategy Into Outcomes. He is here today to educate us on how to achieve that. Dave Bookbinder delves into the details with Jim Gitney, CEO of Group 50 Consulting and author of The Business - Hierarchy Of Needs® – Transforming Strategy Into Outcomes.
Jim Gitney has accumulated more than 45 years of practical experience in the corporate world and as the CEO of Group50® Consulting. He gained his expertise working with notable companies such as GE, Stanley Black & Decker, Sunbeam, and over 200 other companies ranging from startups to large publicly traded corporations during his 18 years of consultancy. Throughout his entire career, he has held leadership positions, including serving on boards of directors and managing various functional organizations such as manufacturing, marketing, engineering, and quality.
During his extensive experience, Gitney consistently observed that a lack of strategic alignment and agreement within organizations, along with poorly executed technology and business processes, were the underlying causes of failed strategies. In 2013, he developed the Business Hierarchy of Needs® as a framework for designing and implementing successful strategies. Strategy Realized – The Business Hierarchy of Needs® serves as his comprehensive guide, presenting a step-by-step process for transforming strategy into tangible results, drawing upon his key learnings from the past 45 years.
In this episode we’re discussing why identifying an organizations most important goal is critical to success, how to think about organizational design, managing change and technology, developing and implementing strategy through engagement, and more!
