Research suggests that individuals who lack empathy and remorse and possess manipulative tendencies are drawn to leadership positions in companies. Surprisingly, the incidence of psychopathy among CEOs is comparable to that of the prison population, with up to 1 in 5 corporate executives exhibiting psychopathic traits. This alarming statistic highlights the significant presence of psychopathy among CEOs, especially when compared to the general population where only 1 in 100 individuals are psychopaths.
In a fascinating conversation, Dave Bookbinder delves into the subject with Jack McCullough, the President of CFO Leadership Council and author of "Secrets of Rockstar CFOs" and "The Psychopathic CEO: An Executive Survival Guide." Jack, who founded The CFO Leadership Council in 2006, has successfully established a platform for chief financial officers to access top-notch professional development programs and networking events. With his extensive experience as the Director of KPMG's Global Innovation Center and as a CFO for 26 startups, Jack understands the challenges faced by corporate leaders in today's business landscape. His expertise has earned him recognition and media attention, with interviews on Bloomberg, CNN, and Fox Business Network, as well as mentions in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, CFO Magazine, and Business Finance Magazine.
Jack's contribution to the field of finance extends beyond his role as a CFO. He has developed a venture capital course for Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan MBA candidates, solidifying his reputation as a thought leader in the industry. Furthermore, he is the visionary behind the highly acclaimed MIT Sloan CFO Summit, regarded as the most influential conference for financial leaders worldwide.
In this episode Jack tells us how to identify a psychopathic CEO including some famous ones;  how to survive working with a psychopathic CEO;  what separates a good CFO from an elite CFO, and more!
